Warriors even league mark with sweep of Crusaders

READING, Pa. – Freshmen Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) and Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) each posted double-doubles to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team to its ninth win in 11 matches, a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17) victory over Commonwealth Conference foe Alvernia University on Wednesday night, Oct. 2, at the Alvernia University Physical Education Center.
 
Fink led the Warriors (14-7 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) by hitting .375 with 10 kills and 13 digs. Slawson added 10 kills and 11 digs and sophomore Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) added nine kills. Senior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 38 assists and nine digs and junior Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) posted a match-high 15 digs. Junior Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) led the team with three blocks.
 
Liz Newman notched 10 kills to lead the Crusaders (3-10 overall, 0-4 Commonwealth) and Kristen Rupp added seven. Jamie Morris posted 21 assists and Tony Maurer notched 13 digs. Grace Butow and Sarah Poplowski each had two blocks.
 
After a tie at three in the first set, Lycoming went on a 12-4 run to take a 15-7 lead after a pair of Alvernia errors. However, the Crusaders closed within two points at 21-19, but a kill by Sutton was followed by one from Richardson and two from Fink clinched the win for the Warriors.
 
In the second set, the Warriors took an early lead at 10-6, but Alvernia fought back to tie it at 14. However, Lycoming, using kills by Fink and Richardson started a 6-1 and never let the Crusaders back within three points en route to the 25-20 win.
 
The Crusaders tied the third set at 11, but a kill from Richardson was followed by a kill from Slawson and one from freshman Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) to get the lead to three points. Alvernia fought back within a point at 14-13, but a kill by Slawson ignited an 11-4 run to close the set.
 
The Warriors get back on the court at the Middle Atlantic Conference Crossovers at Delaware Valley College on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they face FDU-Florham at 2 p.m. before facing the host Aggies at 4 p.m.
