Warriors fall to Wildcats

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Kaitlyn Gulotta (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) posted a first-half goal to lead the Lycoming College women's soccer team, but Penn College scored two second-half goals in a 30-second span to post a 3-1 win in the fourth annual Battle for the Lumber at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
 
The Wildcats (5-4 overall) took an early lead in the ninth minute, as Madilyn Walters drove in and finished off a breakaway. The Warriors (1-8 overall) pressured throughout the half, taking seven shots, and finally breaking through when freshman Shayna Iacoviello (Old Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) crossed a ball and Gulotta connected from 15-yards out, denting the twine from the left side.
 
In the second half, Kelsea Robbins found the back of the net and just 31 seconds later, Valeria Passalacqua fired a shot into the back of the net, both coming in the 57th minute.
 
Walters and Robbins each led the Wildcats with a goal and assist. Gulotta led the Warriors with four of the team's 12 shots and the goal. The 24 shots in the game were split evenly between the two teams while Lycoming held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Senior Caitlin Dougherty (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) finished with seven saves for the Warriors. Reda Vermilya stopped two shots for the Wildcats in the first half and Colleen Bowles picked up the win in the second half, after stopping one shot.
 
The Warriors open Commonwealth Conference play on Sunday, Oct. 6, when they travel to Stevenson for a 1 p.m. match.
