WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore goalkeeper
Sam Stropko (Sayre, Pa./Athens) made nine saves, but the Lycoming College women’s soccer team fell to 2011 New Jersey Athletic Conference frontrunner Montclair State, 8-0, on a sunny Friday, Aug. 31 at the Shangraw Athletic Complex in the 2012 season opener for both teams.
Francesca Gibson led the Red Hawks (1-0 overall) with two goals in the first 20 minutes and Stefanie Gomes also added two goals. Both Jena Carroll and Melisa Koster had two assists.
The Warriors (0-1 overall) notched four shots in the game, including a nice second half header by junior
Spencer Larson (Edgewater, Md./South River) that just inched over the goal after a beautiful corner kick by senior
Leslie Kester (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) into the box.
The Warriors continued to press throughout the game, as they took the only two corner kicks in the second half. Stropko made five stops in the first half and four in the second against the Red Hawks, who were predicted to finish second in the NJAC preseason poll.
Gina Policastro played the first half in net for the Red Hawks and Amanda Vietri played the second, making one save.
The Warriors get back on the field on Monday, Sept. 3, when they head to rival Juniata for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
