WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior
Brooke Strausser (Myerstown, Pa./Conrad Weiser Area) posted three goals and an assist to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team in its season opener at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Saturday, March 3, but Kean used a run of nine straight goals that spanned both halves to post an 18-8 win.
Strausser posted her 10
th career hat trick and four Warriors (0-1 overall) contributed to the scoring, as the Warriors fired 24 shots in the game, just five fewer than Kean (1-0 overall) Lyndsey Cannon led the Cougars with eight goals and an assist and Stephanie Tocko added four goals and three assists.
Lycoming stayed with Kean for much of the first half, as goals from sophomore
Sarah Quigley (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman
Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) answered Kean goals in the first 12 minutes before a goal from Strausser tied the game at three. A pair of Kean goals in a little over a minute were again responded to by the Warriors, as Strausser and sophomore
Maureen Heagy (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) tied the game with free-position goals with 9:37 left in the half.
However, Kean scored four goals before halftime to take a 9-5 lead and kept the run going with the first five goals on the second half before Quigley scored with 12:34 left. However, Lycoming couldn’t close within nine points after that.
Quigley finished with two goals, three groundballs and two draw controls and Maguire added two goals. Defensively, junior
Hope Pappas (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) led the team with three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Freshman
Erin Cieniewicz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) posted five draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Ciara Mastrodom posted two goals and an assist and Julie Knodt added two goals for the Cougars. Tocko notched four groundballs and Cannon posted seven draw controls. Marissa DeAngelis posted two assists and five draw controls.
In goal, junior
Lauren Reitnouer (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) made four saves for Lycoming and Jules Keeley made eight stops and allowed seven goals for Kean.
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, March 7, when they host Allegheny at 4 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
