Warriors use mid-game run to take 11-10 decision from Westfield State

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Down by four goals midway through the first half, the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team scored nine of the next 11 and withstood a late run from Westfield State to take an 11-10 decision for the Warriors’ third straight win in non-conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on a sunny Sunday afternoon, March 18.
 
Junior Brooke Strausser (Myerstown, Pa./Conrad Weiser) led the Warriors (3-2 overall) with six goals for the third straight game while also adding seven groundballs and two caused turnovers. Both freshmen Alysha Conley (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) posted two goals.
 
The Warriors dominated on the ground, posting 31 groundballs and forcing 20 Westfield State turnovers in the win, while also proving the aggressor, forcing Westfield State (1-2 overall) into 43 fouls.
 
The Owls built a 6-2 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game, as they moved the ball with ease thanks to Maura Stack posting a goal and two assists and Genna Raffaelo adding two goals.
 
A pair of Westfield State yellow cards proved fruitful for the Warriors, though, as Strausser connected on a pair of free-position shots to cut the lead to two goals. She cut the goal to a point with 4:16 left and Conley used the first of her two goals to tie the game with 2:42 left.
 
After a man-up goal with 1:44 left by Westfield State, the Warriors responded before the half, with sophomore Maureen Heagy (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) tying the score on a free-position connection with 38 seconds left.
 
Lycoming kept the pressure on in the second half, with Strausser connecting twice in the first five minutes of the half. After Westfield State’s Carley Keeley cut the lead to 9-8 with 11:42 left, the Warriors got a big goal from Conley on a free-position attempt with 8:21 left and Maguire gave Lycoming an 11-8 lead with a score to the upper left corner with 7:00 left.
 
Westfield State added two goals late, but Lycoming controlled the draw with 20 seconds left to maintain the 11-10 margin.
 
Freshman Erin Cieniewicz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) posted five groundballs and five draw controls  and Conley, junior Hope Pappas (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby), freshman Liz Francescone (Cream Ridge, N.J./Notre Dame) and Maguire each picked up two groundballs for Lycoming.
 
Keeley led the Owls with two goals and an assist and Raffaelo also notched two goals. Maura Stack contributed a goal and two assists as eight Owls factored into the team’s scoring. Sarah Giardino picked up a team-high three groundballs.

In goal, senior Kristina Maurer (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Marian Catholic) made eight saves in the win and Westfield State goalkeeper Hannah Joyce stopped seven shots.
 
The Warriors will now look for their fourth straight win when they head to Misericordia for the Misericordia Classic, facing the host Cougars on Friday, March 23 at 4 p.m. before facing Elmira on Saturday at 1 p.m.
