GRANTHAM, Pa. – Senior 197-pounder
Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) extended his winning streak to a career-best 12 matches as he won the Messiah Open title to lead a contingent of three Lycoming College wrestlers to finish in the top four at the tournament on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Hitchcock Arena.
Sophomore 133-pounder
Zack Finn (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) and freshman 157-pounder
Brian Watkins (Bear Gap, Pa./Southern Columbia) each finished fourth for the Warriors.
Korbul reached 20 wins for the first time in his career en route to the title at 197 pounds, as he pinned Liberty’s Jacob Hood in 1:15, and added a pin in the semifinals, as he put Wartburg’s Dan Mahon in 4:48. In the finals, he added a 4-2 win over Wilkes’ Dan Oberrender.
At 133 pounds, Finn followed a first-round loss by fighting through the consolation bracket with four wins, posting an 11-2 win over Elizabethtown’s Kevin Aspril, pinning Wartburg’s Jeffrey Swaney in 6:20 and adding a 7-4 decision against Wilkes’ Anthony Peterson before a medical forfeit moved him into the third-place match. He fell to top-seeded Justin Branham of Liberty, 6-0.
Watkins opened his tournament with a 7-3 win over Wilkes’ Philip Racciato before a loss in the quarterfinals sent him into the consolation bracket. He added three more wins, posting a fall in 4:11 against Wilkes’ Kyle Hinton, a 5-1 decision against Wilkes’ Brandon Dixon and a 7-3 decision against Wilkes’ Tyler Lauchaire to reach the third-place match, where he fell to Messiah’s Josh Bressler.
Sophomore
Greg Wetzel (Arlington, N.Y./Pleasant Valley) notched three wins in the consolation bracket at 165 pounds, falling in the consolation semifinals in sudden victory overtime to Liberty’s Bobby Clymer.
At 141 pounds, both freshman
Caleb Willey (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) and junior
Terrell Nixon (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) each posted two wins.
Freshman
Lucas Wisniewski (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) added two wins in the championship bracket at 149 pounds to move into the semifinals before he was forced to retire with an injury.
At 174 pounds, senior
Josh Gochnauer (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) notched two wins in the consolation bracket. At heavyweight, freshman
Sam Batchelor (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) also had a pair of consolation bracket wins.
The Warriors (4-7 overall) get back on the mat on Thursday, Jan. 26, when they head to King’s (Pa.) for a 7 p.m. match.
