2012 Budd Whitehill National Duals Central

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The first day of the 24th edition of the Budd Whitehill National Duals brought mixed results for the Lycoming College wrestling team, as it posted its largest point total in two seasons with a 41-6 dismantling of Case Western Reserve University, but fell, 18-16 in the opening round of a 23rd-ranked Wabash College and 34-9 to Rhode Island College on Friday, Jan. 13 at Lamade Gym. Both seniors Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) and Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) posted three wins for the Warriors, while Hinton knocked off a nationally-ranked opponent.

No. 7 SUNY Cortland will face No. 22 Springfield in one semifinal and No. 12 Wisconsin-Whitewater will take on No. 24 Ohio Northern in the other one at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Lamade Gym. The duals will begin at 9 a.m.  with the consolation semifinals.

Despite five wins against No. 6 seed Wabash in the opening round of the duals, the Warriors couldn’t make up for the Little Giants’ four bonus points in a 19-15 loss.

The Warriors started out hot against the Little Giants, with Hinton posting a 13-4 major decision over Tommy Poynter at 125 pounds before junior C.J. Conger (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Absegami) notched a 2-0 decision against Mark Escobedo at 133 pounds. The Little Giants fought back with three straight wins to take a 12-7 lead before Lycoming came back with a pair of wins.

Sophomore Greg Wetzel (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) added a 9-5 win over Dalton Stanley at 165 pounds and senior Josh Gochnauer (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) gave the Warriors a 13-12 lead with a 3-2 win over Logan Cooper. However, a late comeback by ninth-ranked Greg Rhoads at 184 pounds gave Wabash a slight lead before Korbul notched a 3-2 win over Dustin O’Neal at 197 to give Lycoming a 16-15 lead, but a Wabash decision at heavyweight tilted the scales in Wabash’s favor.

In the second meet, the Warriors benefitted from four forfeits en route to a 41-6 rout of Case Western Reserve University. It was the first time the Warriors had reached 40 points a 55-0 shutout of RIT on Jan. 9, 2010.

Lycoming also got bonus points from junior Tyler Cunningham (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township), who posted a pin in 1:35 against Dylan Novisky at 184 pounds, sophomore Zach Finn (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) posted an 11-0 major decision against Frank Hu at 133 pounds and freshman Brian Watkins (Bear Gap, Pa./Southern Columbia) notched a 14-3 major against Christopher Crane at 157 pounds.

Rhode Island College posted eight wins in the second round of the consolation bracket to post a 34-9 win to cap the Warriors’ day.

Hinton provided the biggest upset of the day for the Warriors, as he notched a takedown in the third period to post an 8-7 win over D3Wrestle.com’s eighth-ranked Brandon Gauthier. He built a 5-1 lead in the first period with a takedown and a 3-point near fall before Gauthier climbed back into the match, coming within a point at 6-5 before the late takedown sealed the match in Hinton’s favor.

Korbul posted the Warriors’ other win with a pin of Jason Zeramby in the second period of his 197-pound bout.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, the Warriors will wrap up the duals in the consolation bracket, taking on King’s at 10:30 a.m. before facing either SUNY Oswego or Trine at 1:30 p.m.
