WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Charlie Vess (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) scored in his third straight game to finish the Kick-Off Classic with a tournament-high three goals and six points, but lightning shortened the Lycoming College men’s soccer team’s comeback bid and Mount Union’s two first-half goals were enough to take the classic title at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
In the third-place game, McDaniel (1-1 overall) downed NYU-Poly (0-2-1 overall), 2-0.
The Warriors (2-1 overall) began to press late in the second half and were rewarded finally in the 79th minute when Vess took a free kick from 25 yards and drilled a shot into the upper left corner, just beating the keeper with the shot. The Warriors continued to press and move the ball well in the next seven minutes, but lightning in the area forced the game to be suspended.
The Purple Raiders (2-0 overall) got on the board in the 20th minute, with Thomas Beck putting in a ball off a turnover, beating the goalie on a nice give from Kevin Cindric. In the 37th minute, Chris Felker fired in a rebound of a shot from Thomas Beck that hit the left post, giving the Purple Raiders a 2-0 lead.
After the Raiders held a 9-5 shooting advantage in the first half, the Warriors put pressure on in the second half, holding a 6-4 advantage in the latter stanza.
In net, all-tournament team member Jon Critell made two saves for Mount Union and junior James Quinn (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) stopped three shots.
The Warriors end a season-opening four-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 9 when they host rival Susquehanna in the Battle of the Boot at 5 p.m.
