WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Charlie Vess (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) ushered in the Doug Stahl era of Lycoming College men’s soccer with a goal and an assist as the Warriors dominated their season-opener against Penn State-York, posting 27 shots in a 4-0 win on Thursday, Sept. 1 at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
After the game got off to a late start due to bad traffic during Penn State-York’s route to the complex, the Warriors (1-0 overall) didn’t show any ill effects from the late start, taking 16 shots in the first half while not allowing one en route to their eighth straight successful season opener, as they are 6-0-2 in the last eight.
The Warriors got on the board in the 33rd minute when junior Will Reiber (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) finally broke through after netting the ball in the scrum after a corner kick.
In the second half, while the Lions (0-1 overall) started to get more chances, the Warriors got more quality chances, with junior Pat Marion (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) finding Vess and Vess fired it into the shot to the left corner in the 53rd minute. In the 65th minute, Vess returned the favor by finding senior Randon Wilston (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield), who deposited a shot in the lower left corner in the 65th minute.
The Warriors capped the game as sophomore Greg Seanor (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) found the back of the net in the 88th minute for his first career goal.
Junior James Quinn (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) stopped three shots to earn the win in 75 minutes in goal before yielding to freshman keeper Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), who made two stops in the final 15.
Trey Chilcoat stopped seven shots in net for the Lions and Aldin Avdic led the offense with three shots.
Lycoming held a 27-6 advantage in shots and an 8-1 lead in corner kicks.
The Warriors get back in action with the 18th Kick-Off Classic at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they face NYU-Poly at 12 p.m. McDaniel faces Mt. Union in the other first round game at 2:30 p.m.
