WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Grace Gargiulo (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) became the fifth player in school history to reach 60 goals in a season, as she notched her 11th straight hat trick, but the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team fell to Eastern University, 17-8, on a rain-soaked Saturday, April 16, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Gargiulo moved within 10 goals of the school record, as she posted four goals to give her 62 on the season, the fifth-most in school history. Lauren Evangelist holds the school record after scoring 72 in 2004, finishing second in Division III during the season.
However, the Eagles (4-6 overall, 4-3 MAC) broke open the game with a 6-1 run that occupied 17:10 of the first half to give Eastern a 9-4 lead. Sophomore Brooke Strausser (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser Area) cut the lead to four goals at the half, as she scored off a draw with four seconds left.
In the second half, the Eagles scored the first three goals to take a 12-5 advantage after a tally from Amelia McNamara with 19:09 left. The Warriors (2-10 overall, 2-5 MAC) cut the lead to five goals just four minutes later, as Strausser and Gargiulo each tallied strikes, but the Eagles responded with the next five goals before Gargiulo scored on a free-position attempt with three seconds left to make up the final nine-goal margin.
Strausser finished with three goals and freshman Ashley Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) finished with a goal and an assist. Gargiulo and Strausser each posted six groundballs and freshman Amber Graybill (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) added five. Gargiulo led the team w ith four caused turnovers and Strausser posted four draw controls.
Kendall Rood led the Eagles with five goals and an assist and both Grace Griffith and Kelly Dando each added three goals and two assists. Katie Blaylock posted six groundballs and Lindsey Moosey added seven. Courtney Reinhol led the team with four draw controls.
In goal, Lindsey Corbitt earned the win for the Eagles, making four saves. Senior Libby Stoesz (Akron, Pa./Conestoga Valley) made seven stops for Lycoming.
At halftime, the Warriors held a ceremony to honor the team’s three seniors, Stoesz, Meagan Pittius (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and Kate Isennock (Sparks, Md./Hereford).
The Warriors get back on the field on Monday, April 18, in a Middle Atlantic Conference clash with Wilkes at 4 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
