READING, Pa. – Junior Grace Gargiulo (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata), in just six games, surpassed her previous season career high as she scored four goals for the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team on Saturday at Alvernia University to give her 27 on the season, but the Warriors fell to the Crusaders, 19-5 in Middle Atlantic Conference action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Gargiulo, whose previous career-high was 24 goals set as a sophomore, crossed the mark with her second goal of the day with 20:19 left. With 72 goals in her career, the midfielder is just five goals shy of entering the school’s all-time top 10. She needs 10 more points to become the 11th player in school history to reach 100 career points (goals and assists).
The Crusaders (5-0 overall, 2-0 MAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Gargiulo got the Warriors (1-5 overall, 1-1 MAC) on the board with 10:51 left in the first half. Alvernia scored four more goals in the period to take a 10-1 lead.
In the second half, the teams traded four goals apiece in the first 22 minutes of the second half, with Gargiulo scoring three times and sophomore Brooke Strausser (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser Area) added a goal for the fourth straight game in that time. The Crusaders wrapped up the game, though, with five goals in the final eight minutes.
Freshman Sarah Quigley (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the Warriors defensively with three groundballs and both sophomores Strausser and Hope Pappas (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) each added two. Junior Kristina Maurer (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Marian Catholic) added 15 saves in net.
Alvernia was led by four goals a piece from Felicia Sippel and Emily Seifert. Samantha Landis and Sarah George each added three scores and Allison Bainbridge posted two goals and two assists. In goal, Jennifer Czarnecki earned the win, playing the first half and allowing just one goal while making four saves. Victoria Kearn played the second half, making seven saves and allowing four goals.
The Warriors return to the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday, March 23, when they face Wilkes in a MAC contest at 4 p.m.
