SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Junior Grace Gargiulo (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata), posted five goals, including notching four in the second half, but the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team fell to Susquehanna, 14-7, in non-conference action at the Sassafras Field on Wednesday, March 16.
Gargiulo, who has scored 23 goals for the Warriors over the past four games, posted two free position goals and took 18 shots to lead the Warriors (1-3 overall), while also leading the team with six groundballs and two caused turnovers.
The Warriors took an early lead, as Gargiulo drove in on the break after a restart, depositing a shot in from inside eight yards. However, the Warriors, responded with three goals before the halfway mark of the first half. Freshman Ashley Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) stopped the run with a free position goal to make it 3-2, but Susquehanna (2-3 overall) scored the next four goals to take a 7-2 lead into halftime.
The Crusaders scored the first two goals of the second half before Gargiulo netted her second tally. After three more Susquehanna goals gave the Crusaders a 12-3 lead, the Warriors once again finished strong, scoring four of the final six goals in the last 20 minutes, including three from Gargiulo and one from sophomore Brooke Strausser (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser Area).
Junior Kristina Maurer (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Marian Catholic) posted 15 saves in net and added five groundballs, as Lycoming posted a 33-31 advantage in the category. Strausser added four groundballs and five draw controls and sophomore Hope Pappas (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) also added four groundballs.
Ally Bauer and Erin Dyer each led the Crusaders with two goals and Lindsey Derstine added two tallies. Marra Landino added eight groundballs and goalkeeper Emily Stankaitis notched 13 saves.
The Warriors are back on the field and in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday, March 19, when they head to Alvernia for a 1 p.m. match.
