Senior Shauna Starr (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) and sophomore Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) each tossed gems and the Lycoming College softball team posted 20 runs en route to two wins on the second day of the National Collegiate Sports Invitational at the Central Park Sports Complex.  In the first game, the Warriors downed The Principia, 13-2, in the morning opener before downing Suffolk University, 8-1, in the nightcap.

Starr tossed five innings, allowing just two runs and seven hits to earn her first win since her sophomore season on the hill in the opener against Principia.

Meanwhile, the offense started to click with a single run in the first inning before scoring three in the second. Sophomore Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) started the rally with a single before sophomore Bethany Garnand (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) followed with a base hit, setting up a two-RBI single from Lansberry. After an error moved Lansberry into scoring position, she scored on a sac fly by sophomore Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain.

With the score 5-2 after three innings, the Warriors broke open the game and got in position for the run rule win with an eight-run fifth inning. After Lansberry and sophomore Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) led off with a walks, a pair of fielder’s choices helped plate a run, setting up an RBI single from Starr. An error set up an RBI single from freshman Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and another run scoring fielder’s choice brought up Garnand, who delivered a two-RBI double. Another fielder’s choice set up another RBI single from Cline.

Starr finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run and Marianelli added a 2-for-3 game with two RBI and two runs. Garnand went 2-for-3 with two runs and a double.

In the afternoon game, the Warriors downed Suffolk, 8-1, as Lansberry threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one to improve to 2-0.

After a single-tally in the second inning, the Warriors got a big lift in the third inning from Starr, who delivered her first career grand slam after Cline and Lesser reached on an error and sophomore Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) loaded the bases with a fielder’s choice that didn’t yield an out, setting up Starr, who hit a towering shot over the left field fence.

After the Rams (0-4 overall) posted a run in the fourth inning, the Warriors answered with a fifth inning run. In the sixth, Lansberry scored after singling and freshman Samantha Gonzalez (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk.

Lansberry finished 2-for-4 with a run and Starr added a 2-for-3 game with two runs and the grand slam.

The Warriors get back in action at the Central Park Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 16, as they face Barton at 11:30 a.m. before facing Arcadia at 1:30 p.m.
