GRANTHAM, Pa. – Senior
Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) led the Lycoming College wrestling team on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Petrofes Invitational, as he took fourth place to lead three wrestlers that finished in the top eight.
On Saturday, Korbul posted an 8-2 win over seventh-seed Charles Jones to guarantee a place at the tournament and then the No. 6 seed posted a 4-3 upset of No. 4 seed Connor McNamara of Ursinus. However, he dropped the third-place match to No. 2 seed Carl Korpi, 3-1.
Korbul posted a pair of wins in the championship bracket at 197 pounds on Friday, as the sixth-seed notched an 8-0 major decision against McDaniel’s Esteban Monsanto and adding a 10-1 major decision against SUNY Cortland’s Chris Brown. However, he fell in the quarterfinals to third seed and D3Wrestle.com contender T.J. Vallee of Bridgewater State, 4-3. He rebounded though, with a pin of Gettysburg’s Mashall Puls of Gettysburg in 3:54.
Freshman
Brian Watkins (Bear Gap, Pa./Southern Columbia) finished fifth at 157 pounds, as he posted a 6-5 win over eighth-seed Joe Spooner of McDaniel in his opening match on Saturday to guarantee a place at the event. After a loss to McDaniel’s Brian Lowe in the consolation semifinals, he beat Devin Biscaha of Springfield, 5-3, in the fifth-place match.
Watkins broke through with a pair of wins to reach the quarterfinals on Friday, posting a 7-4 win over eight-seed Joe Spooner of Mount Union in the opening round and adding a 4-3 win over Wilkes’ George Simms III in the second round. However, he fell in the quarterfinals to the top-seed Ryan McGilvray of Springfield College, 8-0. However, he moved into the consolation quarterfinals with a 5-0 win over Springfield’s Jovan Rivera.
Senior
Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va./Forest Lake) fell in the semifinals to McDaniel’s Mike O’Boyle in 5:57. He finished in sixth place after medically defaulting the last two matches of the tournament. He advanced into the semifinals with three wins on Friday, including an 11-5 decision against the No. 2 seed, Paul Bewek of Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals. The No. 7 seed, Hinton posted a 14-3 major decision in the opening round against Kyle Coblentz of Messiah and added a 12-6 win against Mt. Union’s Kit Creager in the second round, setting up the showdown with Bewek, who is listed as a contender in the D3Wrestle.com rankings.
The Warriors get back in action on Friday, Dec. 9, when they host No. 16 SUNY Brockport at 7 p.m.
