GRANTHAM, Pa. – Senior
Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) reached the 125-pound bracket to lead a contingent of three Lycoming College wrestlers still alive after the first day of the Petrofes Invitational, hosted by Messiah College, on Friday, Dec. 2.
Hinton advanced into the semifinals with three wins on Friday, including an 11-5 decision against the No. 2 seed, Paul Bewek of Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals. The No. 7 seed, Hinton posted a 14-3 major decision in the opening round against Kyle Coblentz of Messiah and added a 12-6 win against Mt. Union’s Kit Creager in the second round, setting up the showdown with Bewek, who is listed as a contender in the D3Wrestle.com rankings. Hinton will face No. 6 seed Mike O’Boyle of McDaniel in the semifinals. O’Boyle beat Hinton, 6-1, in a dual meet on Nov. 9.
Senior
Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) posted a pair of wins in the championship bracket at 197 pounds, as the sixth-seed notched an 8-0 major decision against McDaniel’s Esteban Monsanto and adding a 10-1 major decision against SUNY Cortland’s Chris Brown. However, he fell in the quarterfinals to third seed and D3Wrestle.com contender T.J. Vallee of Bridgewater State, 4-3. He rebounded though, with a pin of Gettysburg’s Mashall Puls of Gettysburg in 3:54. He will face seventh-seed Charles Jones in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday.
Freshman
Brian Watkins (Bear Gap, Pa./Southern Columbia) broke through with a pair of wins to reach the quarterfinals, posting a 7-4 win over eight-seed Joe Spponer of Mount Union in the opening round and adding a 4-3 win over Wilkes’ George Simms III in the second round. However, he fell in the quarterfinals to the top-seed Ryan McGilvray of Springfield College, 8-0. However, he moved into the consolation quarterfinals with a 5-0 win over Springfield’s Jovan Rivera. He will face Spooner in a rematch in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday morning.
Junior
Terrell Nixon (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and freshman
Ross Orler (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) each picked up a pair of consolation bracket wins at 141 pounds. Nixon posted a 4-2 decision against Ursinus’ Elisha Gray and he added a fall in 3:53 against Johns Hopkins Alex Hochburg and Orler notched a fall in 2:00 against McDaniel’s Tim Gainsborg and added a win by default.
Freshman
Caleb Willey (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) posted a 16-6 major decision against Ursinus’ Evan Million, but he fell in the second round to third-seeded Paul Marcello of Johns Hopkins, 7-4, and fell in the consolation bracket.
At 149 pounds, both senior
Patrick Reynolds (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and freshman
Lucas Wisniewski (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) each posted opening-round wins, with Reynolds notching an 11-0 major decision against Johns Hopkins Hugh Bahe and Wisniewski adding a 1-0 win against Bridgewater State’s Sean Fields.
Sophomore
Daniel Bennett (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) posted a fall in the first round against Messiah’s Kyle Dayhoff in 3:22 at 165 pounds, but he fell in the second round. Sophomore
Greg Wetzel (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) posted a pair of consolation bracket wins, beating Bennett, 7-5 and adding a 5-2 decision against Nicholas Lynch of Wilkes.
At 184 pounds, sophomore
Jonathan Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) posted a pair of consolation bracket wins, beating Scott Forrester of McDaniel, 6-0, and adding a 7-5 win over seventh-seeded Raymond Dungee of Wilkes. Junior
Tyler Cunningham (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) added a 5-4 decision over Ursinus’ Mike Kevlin in the bracket.
At heavyweight, freshman
Sam Batchelor (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) posted a pair of wins, posting an opening round 4-2 decision against Messiah’s Mike DiOrio and adding a pin in 3:25 against Ursinus’ Matt Belle in the consolation bracket.
Freshman
Cody Barbiche (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) notched a fall in the consolation bracket 2:30 into his match with Gettysurg’s Holt Johnson at 125 pounds and sophomore
C.J. Conger (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Absegami) posted a 2-0 win over McDaniel’s James McGarry at 133 pounds.
The Warriors wrap up the Petrofes Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 9 a.m. at the Brubaker Auditorium.
