Warriors fall to Falcons in the playoffs

GRANTHAM, Pa. –
Sophomore Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) posted eight kills and sophomore Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) notched 24 assists and 10 digs for her 16th double-double of the season, but top-seeded Messiah College was able to defeat the fourth-seeded Lycoming College volleyball team, 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-17), in the Commonwealth Conference Championship semifinal at Brubaker Auditorium on Wednesday night, Nov. 2.
 
McKillop became the seventh player in school history to post 1,000 assists in a match with her eighth helper of the night, as the Warriors (15-20 overall) posted 28 kills and held a 47-44 advantage in digs in the match.
 
However, Lauren Rees notched 12 kills and Lindsay King added seven for the Warriors while Jordyn Scheib posted four blocks to lead the Falcons (25-5 overall) to the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Grantham, Pa.
 
In the first set, the Falcons went on an 11-1 run en route to the 25-12 win.
 
The Warriors took a 6-1 lead in the second set and held a 14-10 advantage, but a pair of blocks by Jordyn Scheib helped put Messiah back in the set with a 4-0 run to tie the set. The Falcons scored three more straight points with the score tied at 16 and never led the Warriors tie the set again, although a kill by sophomore Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedord) helped them close within a point before a kill by Lauren Rees gave the Falcons a 25-23 win.
 
In the third set, the Falcons jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never let the Warriors back within three points. The Warriors rallied to close within 16-13, but the Falcons closed the set on a 9-4 run.
 
Junior Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) posted six kills, four digs and hit a team-high .462 for the Warriors and freshman Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) added six kills and six digs. Sophomore Kassidy Sedore (Stormville, N.Y./Spackenkill) led the team with a match-high 13 digs and freshman Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) added seven.
