WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Thanks to another quick goal from junior Pat Marion (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico), the Lycoming College men’s soccer team got out to an early lead and held on for a 2-0 win over Wilkes University on an overcast Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 26, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. The victory helped Doug Stahl become the first rookie head coach in the program’s history to secure a winning season.

Lycoming (9-7-2 overall) got on the board in the third minute, as senior Bob Ziegler (Harrisburg, Pa./Strath Haven) launched a free kick from near midfield to the left side of the goal box, where it found Marion’s right foot. Marion fired a shot into the left corner for his second game-winning goal of the year, as his other came just 16 seconds into a 1-0 win over Juniata.

Junior Matt Snively (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) extended the lead in the 68th minute, as he took a pass from freshman Trevor Bishop (Telford, Pa./Souderton Area) and fired a bullet off the left far post and the ball rang out off the right back post before settling into the net.

The Warriors also got solid goal play from freshman Nick Bruno (Glenside, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep), as the rookie made seven saves to earn a shutout in his first career start.

Patrick Loube led the Colonels with five saves off Lycoming’s 13 shots. Wilkes took 14 shots, led by four from Michael Turner.

The Warriors wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29, with a 3 p.m. match at Commonwealth Conference rival Lebanon Valley.

If the Warriors beat the Dutchmen and fourth-place Arcadia falls to second-place Alvernia, both squads will finish with 10 points in the league standings. The two teams would then go through tiebreaker criteria - starting with head-to-head meeting (a tie), followed by tied teams’ traditional season won-loss records versus conference teams starting with the No. 1 team to the No. 8 team (the same), followed by goal differential between the two teams (1-1) followed by goal differential in conference contests with a maximum of three goals per contest (currently -4 for Lycoming and -1 for Arcadia).
