WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior captain Brad Houseknecht (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) delivered a beautiful one-timer into the left corner of the net in the 66th minute to help lift the Lycoming College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over SUNY Cortland in the third-place match of the Lycoming Kick-Off Classic at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Joe Karslo (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) delivered a cross from the left side and Houseknecht was there to knock in the one-timer, hitting the back left side of the net and end an afternoon of near-misses for the Warriors (2-1 overall).
The Warriors outshot the Red Dragons (0-3), 18-10, and had two shots kicked away by defenders at the goal line in the first half, with one coming off the foot of sophomore Pat Marion (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and the other from Houseknecht with less than a minute left in the half.
However, Red Dragon keeper Niko Martinez-Reyes was solid in net, making 10 saves on the day, including five in the first half to keep the Warriors off the board.
Lycoming kept the pressure on, blasting an equal nine shots in each half, and it was able to thwart off a seven-shot attack by Cortland in the second half to get sophomore James Quinn (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) his first career shutout in his first career start. Quinn made two saves en route to all-tournament honors.
Two other players, Housknecht and sophomore defender Mike Krebs (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned all-tournament honors for the Warriors.
In the championship game of the Kick-Off Classic, Stevenson knocked off No. 19 Montclair State, 1-0, thanks to a second-half goal by John Adamo.
Lycoming gets back on the field on Friday when it heads to Susquehanna looking to retain bragging rights in the Battle of the Boot. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Sassafras Fields.
