WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Dan Mendoza’s goal 10 minutes into the second half proved to be the difference on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 4, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, as No. 19 Montclair State defeated the Lycoming College men’s soccer team, 1-0, in the opening game of the Lycoming Kick-Off Classic.
The unassisted goal helped the Red Dragons improve to 1-0-1 while Lycoming fell to 1-1.
The Warriors took seven shots in the match, led by two each from sophomore Pat Marion (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and freshman Jamison Alleman (Easton, Pa./Easton Area). The Red Dragons fired 22, but Lycoming’s goalies played well, making seven saves in the game.
Freshman Nial Krach (Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hill College) made two saves in 24 minutes before he was forced to leave the game with an injury. Sophomore James Quinn (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) made five saves in the remainder of the game, giving up the lone goal.
Anthony Rogie posted three saves in the shutout for the Red Dragons.
In the other game as part of the Lycoming Kick-Off Classic, Stevenson (2-0) advanced to the title game with a 4-1 win over SUNY Cortland (0-2). Ansger Otto scored three goals to lead the Mustangs.
The Warriors face SUNY Cortland in the third-place match of the Lycoming Kick-Off Classic at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5 before Montclair State and Stevenson face off in the title game at 1:30 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
