WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With scores in the first and the second half, the Lycoming College men’s soccer team controlled the first Battle for the Lumber over Penn College, taking a 2-0 decision in front of 325 fans at the neutral site Balls Mills Soccer Complex on Saturday night, Sept. 18.
The Warriors (4-3 overall) got on the board in the 23rd minute, as sophomore Dominick Dorsey (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) fired a shot off a defender and fellow sophomore Matt Snively (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) came on to get the rebound in deposit it into the upper right corner from 18 yards out.
Sophomore James Quinn (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) preserved the lead later in the half, as Patrick Kehoe took a direct kick from 25 yards out that Quinn saved to his right.
Lycoming added an insurance goal in the 79th minute, as Dorsey headed a ball in the box off the crossbar and a streaking senior Scott Hordis (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) put in the rebound with a waist-high kick into the net.
The Wildcats (3-2 overall) kept the pressure on, as Tristan Smith drew a free kick from the right corner, but his shot hit the side of the net. Late in the half, Smith looked to be on a breakaway, but sophomore Will Reiber (Crofton, Md./South River) made a nice play from behind to kick the ball away.
The lead could have been greater, as the Warriors drew a penalty kick just five minutes into the match, but the shot went wide.
Dorsey finished the game with two assists to lead the Warriors while Quinn knocked away three shots to earn the shutout.
Daniel Shaffer made four saves in net for the Wildcats, who took 10 shots to the Warriors’ 18. The game was a physical matchup throughout, with 33 fouls split nearly down the middle between the two clubs, as Lycoming held the slight edge with 17 whistles.
The Warriors will now get set to face Juniata in another non-conference rivalry match on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 4:30 p.m. in Huntingdon, Pa.
