Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After a promising first set in which the Lycoming College volleyball team hit .300, Alvernia University stormed back to win the next three sets, as the Warriors fell, 3-1 (15-25, 25-10, 25-19, 25-23) on Wednesday, Sept. 15, in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams at the Lamade Gymnasium.
Senior #Kelly Rose# (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban) led the Warriors (5-5 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) with 10 kills while freshman #Katelyn McKillop# (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 25 assists and 11 digs for her third double-double. Freshman Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) had six kills, seven digs, two blocks and two aces and junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) posted 14 digs and two kills. Senior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) added seven kills and four blocks.
The Crusaders (3-6 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) were led by 12 kills and three blocks from Angela Altemose and Gabrielle Albanesius posted eight kills and 12 digs. Kristen Rupp added 14 digs, seven kills and two blocks and Tori Beck posted a kill, 23 assists and seven digs.
With the first set tied at 10, the Warriors ran off six straight points, with Schulze posting two blocks to charge the run. The Warriors closed the set on a 15-5 run, with freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) closing the set with a kill.
In the second set, the Crusaders hit a solid .478 en route to the win and in the third set, the Crusaders ran off a 12-7 run late to close out the win. In the fourth set, the teams battled to a tie at 21 before the Crusaders scored a pair of points and hung on for the win.
The Warriors get back in action with a tri-match on Saturday, as they face Wilkes at 10 a.m. before facing Baptist Bible at 2 p.m. in Lamade Gymnasium.
