WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Playing in their final home game of the 2010 season, the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team used high-scoring offense to fly by the Knights of Arcadia University 16-7 on Saturday, May 1. Nine different Lady Warriors scored, including two with hat tricks.
Starting things off the right way, Lycoming (9-7, 8-4) took a commanding 11-0 leading just 15 minutes into the game. The first five of Lycoming’s goals were scored by five different players and all were assisted. Senior midfielder
Sammi Jo Bell got things going just over one minute in to the tilt, finishing a pass from fellow senior
Justine Titko, who assisted four of the first six goals.
Amanda Baker scored the next goal at the 27:47 mark of the first half, followed by
Brianna Robertson on a pass from
Paige Botti. Sophomore
Grace Gargiulo scored the first of her goals unassisted at 23:47 of the first stanza. Botti got her first goal on a Titko pass while Bell scored her second goal of the day.
Senior
Megan McIntyre posted a goal at the 20:21 mark. Titko got in on the scoring action after converting a pass from Gargiulo. Senior attacker
Jackie Calbi posted a goal at the 19:00 mark on a pass from freshman
Brooke Strausser. Gargiulo and Robertson each scored once before the Knights found the back of the net to break up the run. Robertson ended the half with a score at 3:52 on a look from Baker.
“It was close to 90 degrees out today, and we combated the heat by going to our bench early,” said head coach Erica Brown. “We made a lot of subs and no one missed a beat.”
After making halftime adjustments, Arcadia outscored Lycoming 6-4 in the second half, but the deficit proved to be too much. Calbi scored her second goal of the day just four minutes into the fresh half. Lycoming was held scoreless until there was 18:15 left in the game when Gargiulo fired a shot past the Knights’ goalie. Sophomore attackman
Veronica Clair made good on a free position shot to give Lycoming a 15-4 lead. McIntyre found the back of the net one last time with six minutes left in the game.
Gargiulo and Robertson each scored three goals while Titko handed out four helpers and had one goal. McIntyre, Calbi and Bell all scored twice. Strausser finished the game with two assists. Between the pipes, senior
Brittany Bryan made five saves in her 30 minutes of action and allowed only one goal.
“From start to finish we played extremely well today,” said Brown.
Lycoming will be on the road for its next game in the Middle Atlantic Conference quarterfinals, hosted at Widener University on Tuesday, May 4 beginning at 4 p.m.
