WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior attacker Megan McIntyre tallied seven points, but the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team could not defeat Messiah College in a Middle Atlantic Conference tilt, falling 19-11 on Tuesday, April 6.
Offense was the name of the game in the first half, with the teams combining for 15 goals. The Lady Warriors took a an early 2-1 lead, with
Justine Titko and
Sammi Jo Bell scoring the Lycoming goals. The Falcons (6-3, 4-1) strung together four unanswered tallies before the Lady Warriors put together a four-goal run of their own, with four different players scoring. Bell and Titko each found the back of the net, as did
Amanda Baker and
Paige Botti. McIntyre handed out four assists during the run. Messiah ended the first half with another four-goal run and took a 9-6 lead into halftime.
Messiah outshot Lycoming 19-14 in the opening stanza, but the Lady Warriors (4-6, 3-3) hustled for groundballs, picking up eight to the Falcons’ six. Lycoming also benefitted on offense in the clearing game, gaining the offensive zone on seven of its nine attempts.
In the second half, Messiah extended its goal scoring streak to 10, holding a 15-6 advantage. Over the final 15 minutes of play, the Lady Warriors narrowly outscored the Falcons 5-4, but Messiah held on to its lead to take the victory.
Bell scored the first Warrior goal of the half with 14:05 remaining, followed by three
McIntyre tallies. Senior
Brianna Robertson scored on a free position shot with 55 seconds remaining in the half.
Senior netminder
Brittany Bryan made 13 saves in the game, including eight in the first half. McIntyre finished with four assists and three goals while Bell scored three times and Titko beat the goalie once. Baker recorded two assists and one goal. Titko and Bell each tallied three draw controls, with Bell getting a team-high three groundballs. Freshman
Brooke Strausser led Lycoming’s defense with three caused turnovers. She also scored one goal.
Lycoming held on to its groundball advantage in the second half, finishing with 14 to Messiah’s 13. The Falcons were strong in the draw circle, taking 18 controls while the Lady Warriors only grabbed 13.
The Lady Warriors are home for their next game when they host FDU-Florham on Saturday, April 10. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
