WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Down 13-8 early in the second, the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team rallied back to beat Alvernia University 17-14 on Saturday, April 17 and keep the Lady Warriors’ playoff hopes alive. Senior attacker Megan McIntyre tallied 11 points in the contest, tying her for second-most in a game.
It was a game of runs, with the Crusaders (8-4, 4-4) opening the contest with five unanswered goals before the Lady Warriors rattled off three of their own.
McIntyre had a hand in each of the goals, scoring once and handing out assists to
Sammi Jo Bell and
Justine Titko. Alvernia scored twice more in the half, but Lycoming strung together another five consecutive goals to end the half with an 8-7 lead. Titko and McIntyre each scored twice, with McIntyre assisting one of Titko’s goals. Sophomore
Grace Gargiulo found the back of the net with 14 seconds left on the clock to give Lycoming the lead.
The Crusaders opened the second half with a goal scoring streak of six to recapture the lead, 13-8. Over the final 22 minutes of the game, the Lady Warriors (6-7, 5-4) outscored Alvernia 9-1 to earn the win, including four goals from McIntyre. Amanda Baker had one goal and dished a pass to
Brianna Robertson for the game-winning goal. Baker and Gargiulo each scored once in the last three minutes of the tilt.
McIntyre finished with seven goals, tying her for third-most in a single game, as well as four assists. Gargiulo and Titko each had three goals while Baker had two and Bell and Robertson each tallied one. Lycoming outshot the Crusaders 41-33, including 22-13 in the second half. Senior netminder
Brittany Bryan made 15 stops and had three groundballs. The Warrior defense was strong, particularly during free position attempts, forcing Alvernia to go 0-7.
Lycoming is on the road for its next game when it travels to Wilkes University on Wednesday, April 21. The first draw is slated for 4 p.m.
