WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s lacrosse was edged 8-7 by the Devils of FDU-Florham in a Middle Atlantic Conference match up on Saturday, April 10. The Lady Warriors played a solid first half, but could not carry it over to the second half.

In the first half, Lycoming’s offense was paced by senior Megan McIntyre, who tallied three points on two goals and one assist. Lycoming scored the first two goals of the game, coming from the sticks of Brooke Strausser and Justine Titko. McIntyre assisted on the Strausser tally. After the Devils (8-2, 6-0) scored once, McIntyre found the back of the net on back-to-back shots, giving the Lady Warriors a 4-1 lead. FDU-Florham scored twice more while the Lady Warriors’ final goal came fromSammi Jo Bell on an assist from Paige Botti to take a 5-3 lead into the break.

“The first 30 minutes of the game were excellent,” said head coach Erica Brown. “We possessed the ball, accomplished our goals and came up with the 50/50 groundballs.”

The second half was a different story for the Lady Warriors (4-7, 3-4). Lycoming only scored twice in the period, but allowed FDU five tallies. The Devils found the back of the net first in the fresh half, followed by Lycoming goals from Titko and McIntyre. Both the Warriors’ goals were during a man-down after a Lycoming player received a yellow card. The Devils slowly chipped away at the lead, scoring four unanswered goals over the final 14 minutes of the game to take the victory.

“In the second half, our defense kept us in it a lot,” said Brown. “We need to figure out how to score goals in the final 30 minutes.”

McIntyre finished the day with three goals and two assists while Titko scored twice. Strausser and Bell each scored once. Botti and fellow senior Jackie Calbi both tallied one helper. In goal, senior Brittany Bryan made nine saves, including seven in the first half and held FDU to just two of eight in free position shots.

On defense, senior Danielle Gargiulo returned to action, having not played since March 13 with an injury. She recorded two caused turnovers and one draw control. Fellow senior Ashley Steel also caused two turnovers.

As a team, Lycoming came up with nine draw controls, while the Devils could only grab seven. The Lady Warriors outgroundballed FDU 16-11, but suffered in clearing, gaining the offensive zone on 13 of their 19 attempts.

Lycoming plays its next game at King’s College on Wednesday, April 14 in the only night game on the schedule. The opening draw is set for 7 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
