DALLAS, Pa. – The Lycoming College softball team split a doubleheader with Misericordia University on Thursday, March 25. The winning team in each contest blanked its opponent, with the Cougars taking the first game 3-0 and the Lady Warriors taking a commanding 10-0 victory in game two.

Lycoming (5-13) had difficulty reaching the bases in the first game, getting just five hits in 26 at-bats. Senior infielder Jess Nabholz was the Warriors’ top hitter, getting two hits in three trips to the plate. Right fielder Janelle Poorman picked up one hit while catcher Laura Taylor also tallied one hit and recorded five putouts. Freshman Holly Lansberry was the pitcher of record, taking the loss but recorded four strikeouts in six innings pitched.

“We have a relatively young team this year,” said head coach Dan Lazorka. “Sometimes it takes us two or three trips through the batter’s box to find our groove.”

The Warriors looked to take vengeance in the second game, doing so with efficiency, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits and just one walk, capitalizing on four errors committed by Misericordia (6-4). Nabholz, Poorman and freshman outfielder Amy Cline all had two hits and two RBIs. Cline and Nabholz each scored one run. Taylor and Ashley Demchak each had four putouts. Freshman Brieanne Braga was the winning pitcher, striking out three batters and allowing just six hits. Lycoming played nearly mistake-free softball in the second game, tallying just one error.

“In the second game, we got our bats settled down and were able to make some good contact,” said Lazorka. “We had some good, smart base-running as well.”

Lycoming returns to its league schedule on Saturday, March 27 when it hosts Commonwealth Conference opponent Arcadia University. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex.
