Warriors take Tip-Off Classic by ousting Cougars twice

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – What a difference a week makes.

One week after falling to Misericordia, 3-2, during the MAC Crossovers, the Lycoming College volleyball team knocked off Misericordia, 3-1, twice, during the Tip-Off Classic at Lamade Gym, first finishing the round-robin portion of the tournament with a perfect 3-0 mark by posting a 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22) win before claiming the championship by posting another 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-21) victory.

In the process, senior Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban) and freshman Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) each earned spots on the All-Tournament team.

The Warriors (11-10 overall) heated up during the morning match with the Cougars (10-7), as they went from hitting .049 (12-10-49) in the first set to .295 (20-7-44) in the third set.

Freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) led the Warriors with 13 kills, four digs and two blocks and freshman Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford) added 12 kills and nine digs. Rose also posted 11 kills, four digs and a block and Gear notched eight kills and three digs. Senior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) added six kills, 13 digs and five blocks and freshman Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 45 assists and 17 digs for the double-double. Junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) added a kill, an ace and 23 digs.

The Cougars were paced by eight kills and 18 assists from Kristin Hoffman, while Cailin McCullion added six kills and 13 digs. Shannon Kane posted 14 digs and Krystal Burford posted two blocks.

In the championship match, the Warriors again started slow, falling in the first set, 25-20, but stretched its winning streak to a season-high four matches by continuing to comeback, including froma seven-point deficit to take the third set, 27-25.

DeWalt led the Warriors with 15 kills and Rose added 11 kills and four digs. Gear posted 10 kills, eight digs and two aces and junior Heather Keller (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) added nine kills, eight digs and block. McKillop posted 46 assists and 18 digs and Schulze added six kills, 13 digs and eight blocks. Abel posted a match-high 39 digs and two aces.

McCullion led the Cougars, posting 10 kills, 20 digs and two aces and Burford posted nine kills, four blocks and three digs. Kane added 17 digs and Hoffman posted seven kills, 27 assists and seven digs.

In the third-place match of the tournament, CCNY defeated Hartwick, 3-0.

The Warriors now will look to use their momentum on Wednesday at Elizabethtown in a 7 p.m. Commonwealth Conference match.
