WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Two Warriors scored multiple goals to help the Lycoming College men’s soccer team win 8-1 over Centenary College and advance to the championship game of the 2009 Lycoming Kickoff Classic on Saturday, Sept. 5. They will face Dickinson College, who won the second game of the day.
Lycoming is now 2-0 overall while Centenary falls to 1-2 on the season.
Freshman forward Matt Snively (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) was the leading point scorer on the day, tallying five points on two goals and one assist. Sophomore forward Randon Wilston (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield High School) took just two shots in the game, but connected both for goals.
Senior forward Chris Lorenzet (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) also tallied a multi-point day, picking up one goal and two assists. His goal came on a penalty kick after senior midfielder Mike Coates (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) was dragged down from behind by a Centenary player in the penalty box.
Other goal scorers for Lycoming were freshman midfielder Mike Crebs (Bel-Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), with Snively credited on the assist, junior midfielder Brad Houseknecht (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley High School) and Coates unassisted.
With Lycoming controlling the pace of play, the Cyclones were only able to take six total shots, and tested senior goalkeeper David Bald (Edgewater, Md./South River) just three times.
In the second game of the day, Dickinson College defeated Utica College 3-1 to earn the right to face the Warriors in the championship game. Dickinson held a 2-0 lead for most of the game before Utica made it a 2-1 game in the 81st minute. With 58 seconds remaining in the contest, Dickinson sealed the victory with the final goal of the day.
The consolation game between Utica and Centenary will begin at 11 a.m., with the championship game set to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sunday, Sept. 6.
