Volleyball drops first conference game of the season 3-0 to Widener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
--- The Lycoming College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 loss to Widener University on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The loss was the first Commonwealth Conference loss for the Lady Warriors.

The loss drops Lycoming to 6-9 overall, and 2-1 in the Commonwealth Conference, while the Pride improve to 14-7 and 2-1 in the league.

In the first game, Widener started off with the match with a 12-4 run. After a Lycoming timeout, the Pride continued to take control. The Lady Warriors fell in the first set 25-14.

The Lady Warriors battled in the second game, down 15-10, but forced several long rallies. Despite seven attack attempts by sophomore Veronica Clair (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon), the Lady Warriors fell 25-17.

Game three was the closest match, with Lycoming climbing back down 15-12, to tie the game at 15. After a big block by junior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and senior setter Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg), the Lady Warriors held a narrow 18-16 score. The set continued to be close, Lycoming holding a 22-21 margin. Widener battled back to win the game 25-23 and the match 3-0.

The Lady Warriors are back in action on Friday, Oct. 2 when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y. for the SUNY-Oneonta Invitational. They will face SUNY-Purchase at 2 p.m. and the Rochester Institute of Technology at 4 p.m.
