Volleyball sweeps Alvernia in first conference victory

--- In its Commonwealth Conference opener, the Lycoming College volleyball team won 3-0 over Alvernia University on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Senior Beth Machella dominated from the back line, scoring six service aces. The Lady Warriors earned the sweep 25-7, 25-14, 25-11 in a match that took under an hour.
 
Lycoming is now 4-5 overall on the year and 1-0 in the Commonwealth, while Alvernia slips to 0-9 and 0-1 in conference.
 
As a team, Lycoming took 68 attack attempts, scoring 27 kills. Junior middle hitter Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) paced the night with five kills on 14 swings. Three Lady Warriors scored four kills each; junior Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban) and senior Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa/Shippensburg) took 10 attempts, while sophomore Heather Keller (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) took 12 attacks. Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) also earned three kills.
 
Schulze and sophomore Veronica Clair (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) were the top players at the net with one block apiece. Sophomore Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) led the back row with 15 digs and senior Alyssa Taylor (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) scored three service aces and one kill.
 
Lycoming will be on the road this weekend at the Baptist Bible Quad Match, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. versus Marywood University.
