WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Lycoming College men’s soccer head coach Scott Kennell claimed his 100th victory at the helm of the program, becoming just the second active coach in the Commonwealth Conference to reach the milestone. The Warriors defeated PSU-Berks 6-2 to give Kennell the mark on Monday, Oct. 5.
The win improves Lycoming to 9-3 overall and PSU-Berks falls to 1-10 on the year.
In the first half, PSU found the goal first as the Lion forward juked his defender and beat David Bald (Edgewater, Md./South River) to the right post in the 11th minute. The Warriors evened the score at the 16th minute after Chris Lorenzet (Forest Hills, Md./C. Milton Wright) sent in a corner. Kyle Welsh (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) headed the ball into the air and Randon Wilston (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) converted the goal.
Lycoming’s Zach Frederick (West Chester, Pa./St. Marks Catholic) was dragged down just outside the box, allowing Lycoming to take a set piece deep in the Lions’ zone. With an indirect kick, Welsh gave Mike Coates (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) a little pass which was passed again to Jimmy Deasel (Kingsville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) who found the back of the net, crediting Welsh and Coates with the double-assist.
Also scoring in the first half was Scott Hordis (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) twice, once on an assist from Deasel, and the second after receiving a long pass from Welsh. Pat Marion (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) also found the net after finishing a pass from Derek Hunter (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville), who was near the Berks corner.
The Warriors took a 5-1 lead into the locker room for half time.
Berks got the score to 5-2 at the 63:25 mark, but the Warrior offense was too potent as Lorenzet scored a goal at 73:21 on a pass from Deasel to seal the victory for the Warriors and Coach Kennell.
Lycoming held a 30-7 advantage in shots and a 13-1 mark in corner kicks. Three Warrior goalies saw time in the cage, with only Bald and James Quinn (Tonawata, N.Y/Kenmore East) making one save each.
The Warriors are on the road for their next game when they travel to Lancaster Bible on Thursday, Oct. 8. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
