Abel reaches 1,000 dig milestone, Lycoming splits day one

--- Sophomore libero Emily Abel reached the 1,000 career dig mile stone in Lycoming College volleyball’s first match at the Oneonta State Invitational against SUNY-Purchase on Friday, Oct. 2. Abel finished the opening day with 40 digs in two matches.

Lycoming defeated SUNY-Purchase 3-0 in the opener, and fell to the Rochester Institute of Technology in straight sets. With the split, Lycoming is now 7-10 on the season.

In the first match of the day, the lady Warriors took control over SUNY-Purchase, winning in straight sets (25-14, 25-9, 25-10). Senior setter Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) ran the Lycoming offense, not only scoring 13 assists but led the team in kills with six kills. Sophomore Amy Sharlow posted a match-high 14 assists. Myers and Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) each scored two service aces.

Against R.I.T., Lycoming struggled in the first game, scoring just six team kills. In the second set, the Lady Warriors got their offense going, tallying 14 kills on 35 attempts. Senior Beth Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) put down four kills in the second, while Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) earned eight of her 20 digs.

Lycoming returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Invitational. They will face an opponent to be determined after the teams are reseeded this evening.
