Volleyball edged by Messiah in 3-2 thriller

GRANTHAM, Pa.
--- Rallying from down two sets to none, the Lycoming College volleyball team fell to Messiah College 3-2 in its final Commonwealth Conference match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Sophomore Melynda McGinnis chipped in three service aces in the match.
 
The Lady Warriors fall to 10-17 on the season and 2-5 in the Commonwealth while Messiah improves to 16-13 overall and 5-2 in the league.
 
Messiah controlled the first two sets, taking the wins 25-17 and 25-20. But Lycoming fought back, winning game three 25-18 and the fourth set 25-22. The teams battled through the tie-breaking fifth set, with both teams knotted 13-13 before the Falcons edged the Warriors 16-14.
 
McGinnis (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) and senior Beth Machella each had three service aces. Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) also added seven kills on 32 swings. Junior Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban) finished the night with nine kills on a team-high 29 attempts.

Sophomore libero Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) tallied 33 digs. Senior setter Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) handed out 28 assists and scored two kills. Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) had an efficient match, scoring five kills on eight attack attempts. She also came up with two solo blocks, as well as four assisted blocks.
 
Lycoming rounds out its 2009 season at the Ithaca College Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 31. Lycoming is slated to play the host school in the first match, beginning at 1 p.m.
