WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- With rain pounded Williamsport prior to the game, David Person Field turned into a mud pit, as Lycoming College dropped a 21-7 decision to No. 24 Delaware Valley College on Saturday, Oct. 24. Warrior Ryan Wagaman was the game’s only 100-yard receiver.
Lycoming slips to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference while the Aggies improve to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in the MAC.
The Warrior offense started out strong, with Colin Dwyer hitting Wagaman for a 52-yard touchdown pass, just 1:55 into the game, putting Lycoming up 7-0. Both defenses battled through the rest of the first quarter, with neither team finding the end zone.
In the second quarter, T.J. Chiarlonza (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) attempted a 37-yard field goal, missing by inches as the kick banged off the cross bar. Delaware Valley evened the score at seven apiece on a two-yard Mike Isgro pass to Vincent Lochetto. Lycoming’s defense held the Aggies scoreless until 3:08 in the second quarter before Isgro hit Chris Ruiz with an 18 yard pass, putting Del-Val up 14-7 at the half.
Poor weather an hour prior to the game may have been the cause for the game’s seven turnovers. Dwyer (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) completed 16 passes on 44 attempts, but was picked three times. Wagaman (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) caught seven passes for 114 yards, with his longest coming on the 52-yard touchdown.
Lycoming had a difficult time running the ball, with Josh Kleinfelter (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) gaining only 56 yards in the rushing game. The Warriors had better success in the air, with Dwyer tossing for 204-yards.
Delaware Valley scored the lone points of the second half midway through the fourth quarter at the 9:27 mark on a one-yard Butch Whiteside run. The Aggies were forced to go to their back-up quarterback, Mark Hatty, after Isgro suffered a shoulder injury on a block.
The Warrior defense had a big game, with Ted Geurds (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) pacing the day with 10 tackles, with seven solo and three assisted. Two of his tackles were for a total loss of five yards. Pat McAfee (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had nine tackles, including five solo. Jim Daley (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added his fourth interception of the season as well as a broken up pass.
Head coach Mike Clark and the Warriors return to David Person Field on Saturday, Oct. 31 when they host the Colonels of Wilkes University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
