WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie in the season opener against Centenary (N.J.) on Saturday afternoon. Both teams scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation but could not find the net in either of the extra sessions.
Junior midfielder Mike Coates put the Warriors on the board with a goal from five feet in front of the net in the 81st minute. Junior Chris Lorenzet delivered the ball from the middle of the field to the right corner before senior Tom McVey found Coates on a perfect centering pass in front of the goal. Both Lorenzet and McVey were credited with an assist on the play.
Less than three minutes later, in the 83rd minute, Centenary’s Chris Hill beat Warrior keeper David Bald on a shot from 15 feet out on the right side to tie the score.
The Warriors played a man-down for over 50 minutes after junior Kyle Welsh was ejected with a second yellow card in the 60th minute of regulation. Even playing a man-down, Lycoming poured on the shots during the extra sessions, outshooting the Cyclones 7-2 in the 20 minutes of overtime play and 18-12 in the contest.
Both teams open the season at 0-0-1 and will play the second game of year on Sunday, Aug. 31, as part of the final day of the Lycoming Kickoff Classic.
In the second game of the day, Marywood defeated Alfred 3-1.
Alfred will face Centenary at 11 a.m. before Lycoming squares off against Marywood at 1:30 p.m.
