WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The University of Scranton defeated Lycoming, 70-59, to claim the 2008 Lycoming Men’s Basketball Tip-Off Tournament title on Sunday, Nov. 16.
The Warriors (1-1) opened the game with a 10-2 run in the first four minutes before Scranton (2-0) went on a 14-6 run to tie the game at 16-16 with 10:54 left in the first half.
After the teams exchanged leads, the Royals closed out the half with a 22-5 run over the final eight minutes to take a 41-25 lead into halftime.
Scranton shot 68.4 percent from the floor in the half and 85.7 percent from behind the 3-point arc (6-of-7).
Lycoming opened the second half with a 7-0 run to bring the margin to nine points but the Royals responded, pushing the lead back to 15 points at 49-34 with 15:42 to play.
The Warriors clawed back to within five points when Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a pair of free throws, making the score 62-57 with 3:22 to play, but the Royals closed the game with an 8-2 run to seal the 70-59 win.
Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.V.) led Lycoming with a game-high 19 points, while also recording three assists and two steals. Anthony led the tournament with a 21.0 points per game average.
Greg Sye (Chantilly, Va.) finished the game one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Sye finished the tournament averaging 8.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa.) added nine points and four rebounds to finish the tournament averaging 11.0 points per game. Anthony Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) added nine points, five assists and four steals.
Scranton had four players in double-figures, led by Paul Hawk with 18 points. Ryan Fitzpatrick finished with 17 points, while Zach Ashworth and Luke Hawk each has 12 points.
Anthony and Sye were joined by Hawk, Fitzpatrick and J’Air Brady (Hood) on the All-Tournament team. Ashworth was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
The Warriors will host Penn College on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 8 p.m.
