Men's soccer falls 2-1 at Widener

Tom McVeyCHESTER, Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s soccer team fell 2-1 against Widener on Saturday, Nov. 1. With the loss, the Warriors will be the number three seed in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs.

After a scoreless first half, Widener got on the board in the 50th minute when Doug Gabel scored off a crossing pass from Dan Lorenzet.

Lycoming netted the tying goal in the 59th minute when Tom McVey (Jamison, Pa.) beat the Widener keeper off a pass from Mike Coates (Washington, N.J.).

Gabel scored the game-winner in the 74th minute off a rebound from Bill James’ shot that was saved by Warrior keeper David Bald (Annapolis, Md.).

Bald had four saves in net.

Lycoming outshot the Pride 15-11, but shots on goal were even at six for each team. The Warriors had four corner kicks to Widener’s three.

Saturday’s game set up the final standings in the conference. Lebanon Valley (5-1) will be the top seed, followed by Messiah (5-1), Lycoming (4-2) and Widener (3-3).

The Warriors will travel to Messiah on Tuesday, Nov. 4, for the semi-finals. Kickoff has been set for 7 p.m.

The Falcons defeated Lycoming 5-0 at Messiah on Oct. 18.
