WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – David Bald tied the school record for shutouts in a season and Chris Lorenzet netted his 13th goal of the season as the Lycoming College men’s soccer team defeated league-leading Lebanon Valley, 1-0, on Senior Day, Oct. 25.
The Dutchmen (9-8-0, 5-1-0 Commonwealth) entered Saturday’s match with the chance to clinch the top seed in the playoffs with a win or a tie and were riding high after a 2-1 upset over No. 5 Messiah last week.
Temperatures in the 50s with constant rain and winds over 20 miles-per-hour didn’t deter the Warriors (11-4-1, 4-1-0 Commonwealth), who needed a win to have a chance at clinching a tie for the regular-season Commonwealth title with Lebanon Valley and Messiah.
Lorenzet (Forest Hill, Md.) put Lycoming on the board in the 24th minute after Matt Frey (Greensboro, Md.) hit the goal post on a free kick. The ball rebounded to Lorenzet who notched the game-winner past Dutchmen keeper Tim Mehl.
The Warrior defense held strong in the second half as Lebanon Valley registered seven shots to Lycoming’s three.
Bald (Annapolis, Md.) earned the shutout win, his ninth of the season, after registering four saves. Nine shutouts ties him for the single-season record, set by Jason Fesler in 2004. The nine team shutouts also ties a team record for the Warriors.
Lycoming held a 13-12 advantage in shots while both teams managed four shots on goal. The Warriors were awarded eight corner kicks to the Dutchmen’s six.
Lycoming can clinch a tie for the regular season title with a win at Widener next Saturday, Nov. 1.
The Warriors will host Lancaster Bible before that game. The Lancaster Bible game, set for Tuesday, Oct. 28, will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio and will be streamed for free on the internet. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. from the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Notes: Saturday was senior day for the Lycoming men's soccer team ... six seniors were honored before the game: Brian Marshall (Athens, Pa.), Joe Pusateri (Rockville, Md.), Tom McVey (Jamison, Pa.), Matt Frey (Greensboro, Md.), Jake McDonough (Collegeville, Pa.), Brent Hile (Linden, Pa.).
