Men’s soccer stays unbeaten in conference with shutout over Etown

Mike CoatesELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s soccer team improved to 9-3-1 overall and remained unbeaten in the Commonwealth Conference (3-0) with a 2-0 shutout win against Elizabethtown on Wednesday, Oct. 15. It was the first time in the history of the program that the Warriors have won at Elizabethtown.

Lycoming got on the board in the 29th minute when Mike Coates (Washington, N.J.) took a pass from Chris Burgess (Bel Air, Md.) and beat the keeper for his fourth goal of the season.

The Warriors added a second goal at the beginning of the second half when Chris Lorenzet (Forest Hill, Md.) netted his team-leading 11th goal of the season off an assist from Burgess in the 48th minute.

It looked as if the Blue Jays would score with 14:42 left in the game but defender Joe Pusateri (Rockville, Md.) cleared a ball off of the goal line to preserve the shutout.

David Bald (Annapolis, Md.) improved to 9-2-1 in goal and registered his eighth shutout of the season. The Warrior defense did not allow Elizabethtown (3-8-2, 0-3-0 Commonwealth) to get a single shot on goal in the contest.

The Warriors held advantages of 9-6 in total shots and 4-0 in shots on goal. The Blue Jays posted a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Lycoming will travel to Messiah on Saturday, Oct. 18, for a critical conference match. The Warriors sit second in the standings with a 3-0 mark. Messiah, ranked No. 5 in the nation, was upset by league-leading Lebanon Valley (4-0) on Wednesday to drop to third in the conference.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
