After long stints with both the Warrior Run Area High School and Bucknell University cross country and track and field programs,
Kip Hoffman is set for his second year as head coach of the Lycoming College cross country program in 2018.
In his first year with the team, Hoffman helped the women's cross country team to a 38th-place finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional, the second-best finish in program history, while helping mentor Rachel Fritz, who posted the third-fastest time in program history at the race.
Hoffman spent 11 seasons with with Bucknell University’s track and field team as a volunteer assistant coach before taking over at Lycoming.
At Bucknell, Hoffman has worked mainly with the distance runners and coordinated the men’s cross country team’s strength program. He has assisted the men’s outdoor track and field team to four straight Patriot League titles from 2010-13 and an indoor track and field title in 2012. He helped the women’s cross country team to four Patriot League titles (2007, ’09, ’15, ’16), the indoor track and field to seven titles (2007, ’08, ’10, ’12, ’13, ’15, ’17) and the outdoor track and field to eight more conference titles (2007, ’09, ’10, ’11, ’13, ’15, ’16, '17).
Prior to Bucknell, Hoffman was the head coach of the Warrior Run Area High School boys’ and girls’ cross country and track and field teams, and was in charge of the distance and mid-distance runners from 2000-06.
In cross country, Hoffman coached six individual state qualifiers, a girl’s division team championship and a two-time state qualifier, while also leading the Defenders to a 14-1 record, which was the most victories in school history. In track and field, Hoffman’s girls’ team produced eight records in mid-distance and distance, while the boys added one. He helped coach six state qualifiers and three state medalists on the boys’ side.
An accomplished runner himself, Hoffman finished 83
rd overall in the 2008 Boston Marathon, posting a 2:33.52 in the 26.2-mile race, also placing 56
th at the New York Marathon in an almost identical 2:32.53 that same year. He still races competitively at several events each year, at all distances from 5K to 50 miles.
He is the race director of the annual Watsontown JesVic 5K, which is an annual run in memory of two Watsontown women who passed away after a battle with cancer.
Hoffman was a four-year member of the cross country and track and field team as Bloomsburg University. He was a three-time All-PSAC honoree in the 1,500-meter run and placed second in the ECAC in the 3,000-yard run. He developed into the cross country team’s top runner by his senior year, finishing 39
th at the NCAA Division II East Regional.
A 1999 graduate of Bloomsburg with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Hoffman is a science teacher at Warrior Run Area High School. He resides in Watsontown with his wife, Tam, two daughters, Alyssa and Kara, and son, Aiden.
