The Budd Whitehill National Division III Wrestling Duals: At Home in Lamade Gymnasium Since 1995

Now in its 36th year, the Budd Whitehill National Duals was a unique concept in 1989 when eight of the top teams in the nation came together at Ithaca College for a dual meet tournament then named the Division III Wrestling Duals.

Created at the same time as the NWCA Cliff Keen Duals, the Division III National Duals filled a void in small college wrestling. The NWCA National Duals only invited the Division III champion at the time.

In 1989, though, it was easy to see how vital and exciting a Division III national dual meet tournament could be. It was a quick success and the event jumped from eight teams to 16 teams in 1990, when Lycoming competed in the event for the first time, finishing fifth under head coach Budd Whitehill.

Finding a Home
By 1995, the Division III National Duals were bringing in the top teams in the nation, hosting the eventual NCAA champion twice at the event, although, ironically, in each case, the NCAA title-winner (Ithaca in both 1989 and 1994) was edged out in the finals of the duals, with Delaware Valley winning the first title and Trenton State earning the win in 1994.

Under the guidance of head coach Roger Crebs, Lycoming College made a successful bid to host the event at Lamade Gymnasium in 1995. The two-day event, with four mats laid across the long gym floor, was an immediate fit on the Williamsport campus.

In 1996, a coaches’ vote after the tournament kept the event in Williamsport and it has never left.

Honoring Budd
At the same coaches’ meeting after the 1996 tournament that determined to keep the Duals in Williamsport, it was also decided to change the name to the Budd Whitehill National Duals, in memory of the former Lycoming wrestling coach.

Whitehill, who died in the summer of 1993, started the Lycoming wrestling program in 1956. He was the program’s only head coach for its first 37 seasons.

He led Lycoming to a 374-175-7 record and 10 Middle Atlantic Conference championships during his career. His 374 victories rank 12th all-time amongst NCAA Division III coaches.

In 1991, Whitehill was inducted into the NCAA Division III Wrestling Hall of  Fame and he was also inducted into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Hall of Fame, the District 4 Wrestling Hall of Fame, the West Branch Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and the Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame.

Before his death, the Budd F. Whitehill Endowment Fund was set up at Lycoming College and the Lamade Gym wrestling room was also named in his honor.

Still Going Strong
In 33 years, the Budd Whitehill National Duals has seen its fair share of memorable moments.

The College of New Jersey has had plenty of them, winning a record 11 titles at the event, including six in the 1990s. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse also had a dominating run at the tournament, winning three crowns in a five-year span from 2000-04, while Messiah has reached the finals in six straight years and won a record five in a row from 2014-18.

Lycoming has also had its share of success at the event, winning titles in 1997 and 1999 and placing at the event 20 times, second only to TCNJ, which has earned its way onto the platform 30 times.

SUNY Cortland has placed 19 times and won a title.
