Zimmerman paces Lycoming past Catholic, 49-25

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Lycoming College football team triumphed over Catholic, 49-25, in a Landmark Conference game on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 3, at David Person Field at Girardi Stadium. The Warriors scored 21 unanswered points from the second quarter into the fourth, moving from an 11-point lead to a 32-point advantage.
 
Junior Joe Lyons (Margate City, N.J./Atlantic City) completed 11 of 16 passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns and added 20 rushing yards. Lyons recorded a season-high four pass touchdowns. Senior Jared Zimmerman (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) caught six passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Zimmerman set a career high with 146 receiving yards and reached a career high with three receiving touchdowns. Senior Terrence Oliver (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) rushed 13 times for 123 yards and a touchdown, recording a season-high rushing total of 123 yards. Junior Aiden Barlett (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) recorded three tackles and returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown. Junior Daniel Atsou (Capitol Heights, Md./Suitland) recorded eight or more tackles in two consecutive games.
 
The Warriors' first snap from scrimmage became an 80-yard touchdown run by Oliver to put the Warriors ahead 7-0 early in the first quarter after sophomore Vasco Granitto (Dover, Del/Polytech) hit his first of a career-high total of seven successful PAT kicks. After Catholic turned a Warriors' interception into a touchdown that tied it at 7-7, the Warriors responded with a 74-yard drive capped by Lyons' 9-yard touchdown pass to Zimmerman. Catholic added a 34-yard field goal late, but the Warriors finished the quarter ahead, 14-10.
 
The Warriors' defense produced interceptions on consecutive Catholic possessions in the second quarter, with sophomore Evan Woodward's (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) takeaway setting up Lyons' 70-yard touchdown pass to Zimmerman and Barlett returning the next one 37 yards for a score. After Catholic scored to make it 28-17, Lyons answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Zimmerman, and the Warriors later stopped a fourth-down try at the Warriors' 41 before Lyons found first-year Wesley Horsman (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) for a 14-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left. The Warriors scored 28 points in the quarter and went into halftime ahead 42-17.
 
The Warriors' defense kept Catholic off the board in a scoreless third quarter, forcing three punts and allowing just one rushing yard. Sopomores Trinity Hill-Caleb (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) and Yahseam Stokes (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) combined on a 12-yard sack to halt Catholic's opening drive. Junior JayVon Story (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic) recorded his first sack of the season, and the team totaled a season high of four in the game.
 
The Warriors' first possession of the fourth quarter went 73 yards, with Lyons hitting Zimmerman for 33 yards before sophomore Elijah Jordan (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) scored from 2 yards out to make it 49-17. It was Jordan's first rushing touchdown of the season. Catholic answered with a touchdown and two-point conversion to make it 49-25, but the Warriors followed by running for two first downs before a fumble ended the drive at the Catholic 35. The defense closed the game by forcing a turnover on downs at the Catholic 38 with 25 seconds left, and the Warriors finished off the 49-25 win.
 
The Warriors recorded a season high of 243 rushing yards in the game.
 
Catholic's Charles Gulbin completed 30 of 48 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for a score. Adrian Fresen caught 10 passes for 100 yards and added a PAT reception. Bobby Hartman finished with eight receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown. Billy Turner recorded eight tackles and an interception with an 11-yard return.
 
The Warriors are 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Catholic is 0-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
 
Up next, the Warriors travel to Edwardsville, Pa., to face Wilkes in Landmark Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m.
