SCRANTON, Pa. - In the first game, junior Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) threw a nine-inning one-hit shutout, striking out a career-high 10, and in the second game, she had a RBI triple and a RBI single to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a sweep of the University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action, winning the first game, 1-0 and the second, 4-2, at Magis Field.
In the first game, Eiswerth (5-4) allowed just two base runners, both in the second inning, when Emmie Feltenber had a double and Juliana Janezic walked. After that she retired 22 batters in a row to give the offense enough time to get on the board in a 1-0, nine-inning win.
Senior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) led off the ninth inning with a walk, the first baserunner in the game since the fourth inning. After a sacrifice and a strikeout, sophomore
Mallory Rodarmel (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) singled through the left side to bring in Segraves with the winning run.
Eiswerth closed the door with two strikeouts and a grounder to first to end the contest.
Janezic (5-1) pitched nine innings, allowing four hits and one run. She struck out six and walked two for the Royals (13-5 overall, 0-2 Landmark).
Lycoming (11-6 overall, 4-2 Landmark) came back from a two-run deficit in the second game, scoring the last four in a 4-2 win.
Scranton scored two runs in the second, but the Warriors came back with three i the third to take the lead. Sophomore
Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) led off the inning with a double before Segraves singled and took second on a throw. After a groundout scored Alexander, Eiswerth tripled to right field to tie the game. A fielder's choice allowed first-year pinch-runner
Hana Styers (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) to score the go-ahead run.
In the fifth, the Warriors tacked on an insurance run, as junior
Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) doubled to right before Eiswerth singled into left field to bring in Daub.
Eiswerth finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and Rodarmel was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Celia Totaro was 3-for-3 for the Royals and Kylie Rochford was 2-for-2 with a RBI.
Senior Kylie Russell (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) (6-2) pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and two runs. She walked five and struck out two. Carley Noble (2-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and three runs. She struck out two for the Royals.
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 9, when they face Wilkes University in a 3 p.m. Landmark Conference doubleheader.
