Warriors fall to 14th-ranked Scranton in conference final

SCRANTON, Pa. - Posting two shots in the first half and adding five in the second, the No. 2-seeded Lycoming College women's soccer team fell, 3-0, to top-seeded University of Scranton, ranked 14th in the nation, in Lycoming's first Landmark Conference Championship final in the program's 31-year history at Weiss Field on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 9.

Leading the league with an .898 save percentage, Lycoming's junior goalkeeper Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J. / Morris Catholic) posted 10 saves against the Royals (17-1-2 overall). Scranton's goalkeeper Nicole Olson notched one save.

The Warriors posted three corners kicks and fired seven shots at the Royals. Sophomore Mikayla Long (Lewisburg, Pa. / Lewisburg Area) led the Warriors' efforts with three shot attempts. In return, Scranton had 10 corner kicks and 32 shot attempts.

Long, Ella Magee (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area), and junior Aubrey Williamson (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) all had 20 points this season. Williamson, who leads the Landmark Conference with nine assists, also broke the program record for career assists on Thursday night in the semifinal with Moravian with 20.

Senior Madison Maihle (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore Area) — who scored the Warriors' second-half, game-winning goal in the semifinals against Moravian — broke a program record for the most games played (78).

Scranton's Morgan Griffin and Mary Haggerty each scored a goal in the first ten minutes of play, earning the Royals an early lead. Niamh Healy secured Scranton's last goal in the 79th minute in the second half, securing Scranton a ten-game winning streak and their sixth straight conference title.

Lycoming (15-2-3 overall, 6-1-2 Landmark Conference) earned their place in the Landmark Conference Championship final after beating No. 4-seed Moravian 2-1 on Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Landmark Conference semifinals at UPMC Field. The Warriors ended the 2024 season with a program record of 15 season wins, which surpassed the record of 12 held by the 2022 squad. The 2024 squad advanced to postseason play for only the second time — joining the 2022 team — and Lycoming hosted their first postseason game in program history with Thursday's semifinal at UPMC field.
