Warrior rally falls short against Catholic

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A perfectly executed two-minute drive by the Lycoming College football team lasted 17 plays and 80 yards before sophomore quarterback Jay Huber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) found junior Dawson Debebe (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) on a five-year quick route with nine seconds left, but the ensuing two-point conversion was broken up, helping the Catholic University of America squeak out a 14-12 Landmark Conference win on Saturday, Oct. 19, at David Person Field.

The Warriors (2-4 overall, 0-2 Landmark) were led by Huber, who finished 27-of-51 for 300 yards and a score in his first career start. Debebe caught 10 passes for 157 yards and sophomore Jared Zimmerman (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) posted five catches for 41 yards. Sophomore Terrence Oliver (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) rushed 21 times for 97 yards, as Lycoming ran 89 offensive plays, gaining 394 yards of total offense.

Senior Jake Welch (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) and junior Elisha Carothers (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) each had eight tackles, with Carothers adding three for a loss. Junior Tyler Marshall (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), senior Joey Rivituso (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame-Green Pond) and junior Michael Sipps (Lawrenceville, Pa./Cowanesque Valley) each had seven stopps, with Sipps adding a fumble recovery. Junior Ryan Pentz (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) posted five tackles and two interceptions.

A Catholic (3-4 overall, 1-2 Landmark) fumble near midfield helped the Warriors get on the board, as they embarked on a seven-play, 33-yard drive before first-year Kyle Flack (Southampton, Pa./William Tennant) hit a 28-yard field goal.

After a pair of Catholic touchdowns, the Warriors went on an 11-play, 89-yard drive in the last minute of the first half, setting up another 28-yard field goal from Flack with two seconds left in the second quarter to make it 14-6 at the break.

In the second half, both teams traded near missed opportunities, as Catholic was intercepted in the end zone, and the Warriors had a field goal blocked, before field position turned against the Warriors for much of the fourth quarter. They finally gained momentum after getting the ball at the 20-yard line with 2:01 left. Huber was 10-of-14 on the drive for 67 yards, setting up the scoring strike to Debebe with just nine seconds left. The pass on the two-point conversion was broken up by Tyler Donnelly.

Daequan Harvin led the Cardinals with 32 rushes for 157 yards and Joey Gulbin finished 16-of-29 for 161 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted three times. Anthony Giordano had seven catches for 41 yards.

Shane Toal had nine tackles and Mason Stillwell had eight tackles, 1.5 for loss and two breakups. Sean Holt had two tackles for a loss and a sack.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Oct. 26, when they host Keystone College in a 1 p.m. Landmark Conference matchup.
