Warriors fall to Pride in opener

CHESTER, Pa. – First-years Quasim Benson (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and Terrance Oliver (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) each rushed for touchdowns and sophomore Dawson Debebe (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) recorded a 150-yard game to pace the Lycoming College football team, but Widener University notched 455 yards of total offense in a 42-21 decision at Leslie C. Quick Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Benson finished with seven carries for 56 yards, scoring on a 47-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and junior Jacob Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro) rushed eight times for 33 yards. Debebe finished with six catches for a career-best 152 yards, the program's first 150-yard receiving game since Ryan Umpleby had 241 receiving yards against Misericordia in 2015. Junior quarterback Will Fish (Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) finished 11-of-35 passing for 188 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted three times.

Sophomore Jordan Rhinehart (Upper Darby, Pa./Father Judge) led the defense with seven tackles and three breakups and both seniors Austin Rowley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and Hunter Campbell (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) each had seven stops, with Rowley adding an interception. Senior Brett Gasker (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) had five stops and a pick and sophomore Elisha Carothers (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) added four stops and a fumble recovery.

On Benson's first rush, he busted to the sideline and then broke through a wall of defenders and was gone, helping to make it 14-7 just three plays into the second quarter. The Warriors got another big play on their next drive when Fish found Debebe for a 64-yard reception before Oliver scored on a one-yard run, but the Pride added one more touchdown before halftime to make it 28-14 at the break.

The Warriors used Rowley's interception to set up their last score, which came on a four-play drive, with Fish finding Debebe for a 13-yard score with 9:05 left in the third quarter. A Widener touchdown late in the quarter was the last score of the game.

Chase Diehl finished 29-of-42 for 366 yards and five touchdowns. He was intercepted twice. Isaac Hostetter caught eight passes for 145 yards and three scores and Jordan Baxter made eight receptions for 99 yards. Colin Murt led the Pride with nine tackles, one for loss and an interception.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they host Cortland at 1 p.m. at David Person Field. Before the game, Girardi Stadium will officially be dedicated at 12:30 p.m.
