DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore
Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) threw out two base stealers from her knees, the second with no outs in the seventh inning, to lead the second-seeded Lycoming College softball team, which posted a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology in a MAC Freedom Championship elimination game on Thursday evening, May 4, at Delaware Valley University's Softball Field.
Â
After Daub caught a pinch-runner leading to start the seventh, a pair of flyouts left a runner stranded for Stevens (18-20 overall).
Â
Junior
Kylie Russell (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore) (13-5) rebounded from a loss in the opening game of the tournament by tossing a complete-game five-hitter, striking out three and walking two. Russell is tied for third in the program's single-season wins record book, one victory shy of the school record set by Mary Beth Schwindenhammer set in 1994 and tied in 1996.
Â
The Warriors will continue their run in the tournament on Friday, May 5, facing fourth-seeded Arcadia University in another MAC Freedom Championship elimination game at 1 p.m., with the winner moving on to face the loser of an 11 a.m. game between top-seeded Misericordia and third-seeded King's, in an elimination game at 3 p.m.
Â
Daub walked with one out in the bottom of the fifth before a single from sophomore
Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and another walk from first-year
Hailee Sobieski (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic) loaded the bases. First-year
Mallory Rodarmel (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) followed with a sac fly to center field to score Daub and make it 3-2.
Â
In the fourth inning, the Warriors got started with two outs, as first-year
Kristin George (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) walked before Russell singled up the middle, setting up a single into left-center from first-year
Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) to bring around George.
Â
The Ducks came back to tie it in the top of the fifth inning, with a RBI triple from Meg Halloran.
Â
The Warriors got on the board in the first inning, with Alexander leading off with a walk before senior
Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) hit a one-out double to the wall to bring in the rookie shortstop.
Â
The Ducks tied the game at one in the bottom of the inning, using a walk, a sac bunt, a groundout and an error to score.
Â
Wetzel went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, moving within three hits of the program record of 135 held by Taylor Lesser '13. Russell also went 2-for-3, as Lycoming notched seven hits in the game.
Â
Jessica Guerrero was 2-for-4 with a run to lead the Ducks, who had five hits and two walks.
