Russell tosses 3-hitter as Warriors split at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Junior Kylie Russell (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) tossed a three-hitter in the second game against 2022 NCAA Tournament team and MAC Freedom preseason favorite Arcadia University to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a 4-1 win after a 2-1, eight-inning setback in the first game of the doubleheader at Blankley Field on Sunday afternoon, April 2.

The Warriors (13-5 overall, 5-1 MAC Freedom) kept hold of first place with the win over the Knights (13-11 overall, 4-2 MAC Freedom), still sitting a game ahead of both Misericordia and King's, who are both 3-1.

Russell (5-3) struck out nine in the complete game win and extended her stretch without allowing an earned run to 26.1 innings. She only let one runner past second base in the game and retired 11 in a row from the first to fourth innings.

The Warriors got on the board in the third inning, as junior Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) singled into right, took second on an error and came around to score on a two-out single to center from senior Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Crest). They tacked two more runs on in the fourth, as sophomore Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale Area) singled with one out, stole second and scored when Russell doubled to the opposite field. First-year Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) followed with another double to bring in Russell.

Senior Morgan Wetzel (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) led off the fifth with a double to left, taking third on an error before scoring on a two-out single to left from first-year Hailee Sobieski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Catholic) to make it 4-0.

The Knights scored an unearned run in the fifth off two singles, but Daub caught a runner stealing to shut down the threat and Russell allowed just one base runner in the last two innings.

Sobieski went 2-for-4 with a RBI and Russell went 2-for-3 with a run, a double and a RBI to lead the Warriors.

Paige Nolan (4-6) took the loss, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings.

The Warriors scored first in the first game of the doubleheader, but Arcadia tied the game in the bottom half of the second and won it with an unearned run in the eighth in the 2-1 win.

Juliana Presto (9-4) earned the win for the Knights, allowing four hits, two walks and striking out 12 in the game.

Sophomore Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) (3-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing three hits and an unearned run in three innings. She struck out two.

Eiswerth singled to short to lead off the second, moved to second on a sac bunt, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout from Sobieski.

Arcadia tied the game in the bottom of the second thanks to two singles and a walk, but that was the only run until it used two singles, a sacrifice and an error to score in the eighth.

Allison La Rochelle led the Knights, going 3-for-4 with a run and RBI and Nathalia DiIanni went 2-for-4 with a run.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 4, when they host Juniata in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
