Lanphear wins 10th to lead Warriors at King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Sophomore Sarah Lanphear (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) became the third Lycoming College women's tennis player to reach 10 singles wins during the season to wrap up a 6-4 MAC Freedom win over King's College on Tuesday, April 18, at Kirby Park, to move within a win of earning the school's first bid to the MAC Freedom Championship.
 
First-year Emma Kelchner (Nescopeck, Pa./Central Columbia) and sophomore Rei Saar (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) posted singles and doubles wins to lead the team.
 
Kelchner, now 11-5 overall, defeated Braelan Drollas at the No. 4 singles spot, 6-0, 6-2. Saar downed Jackie Costello, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles to move to 13-4 on the season, as she became the ninth player in program history to reach 30 career wins.
 
The bottom four in the lineup posted wins for the Warriors (8-7 overall, 3-3 MAC Freedom), as Sarah Lanphear and junior Hiyori Iai (Zushi, Japan/Yokohama Science Frontier) also won their singles matches. Lanphear beat Payton Lloyd in a superset tiebreaker, 6-4 (4-7), 6-2, 10-8, at No. 5 to improve to 10-7 in singles action. Iai won 6-4, 6-4, over Emma Rooney at No. 6.
 
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Kelchner and junior Emily Wolfgang (Allenwood, Pa./Montgomery Area) defeated Ashley Kenia and Hailey D'Amato, 8-3, and Saar and junior Hannah Seebold (New Columbia, Pa./Milton) beat Jackie Costello and Drollas, 8-5, at No. 2.
 
The Monarchs fell to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the MAC Freedom.
 
The Warriors return to the court on Saturday, April 22, when they travel to DeSales University for a 1 p.m. MAC Freedom matchup needing a win to secure a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2019.
