NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Timely hitting, solid defense and good pitching is usually a good recipe for success in softball, and Lycoming College did all three of those things well on Thursday, March 16, at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex, leading to a 6-0 win over McDaniel College before a 4-2 win over Plattsburgh State in the nightcap.
Â
In the first game against McDaniel, senior
Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) (2-0) tossed a five-hit shutout and in the second against Plattsburgh State, first-year
Claire Alexander (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) drilled a two-out two-RBI double to break a 2-2 tie and sophomore
Avery Eiswerth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) (1-0) tossed a complete game for her first win of the year.
Â
Four Warriors (5-1 overall) wrapped to hits against the Green Terror (4-8 overall) to lead the way, with senior
Morgan Wetzel (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) going 2-for-4 with a double and a run, first-year
Hailee Sobieski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Catholic) going 2-for-4 with a run, junior
Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) going 2-for-4 with a run, a double and a RBI and Eiswerth going 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.
Â
Lycoming got started in the third inning when Eiswerth singled into left, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a two-out hit from junior
Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area). The Warriors tacked on three in the second, as Sobieski and DeWolfe led off with singles before a sac bunt moved them up, setting up a single from Eiswerth. Eiswerth stole second before a groundout and an error scored the last two runners.
Â
First-year
Kristen George (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) reached on an error in the sixth before scoring on a two-out double from Alexander and Wetzel singled before scoring on a double from DeWolfe in the seventh.
Â
Whary, meanwhile, kept the Green Terror off balance, allowing five hits and a walk, but no runner touched third in the contest. She struck out two and used a mix of nine flyouts and 10 groundouts in the win.
Â
Parker Murphy (2-3) took the loss, allowing 12 hits and four earned runs in the complete game. She struck out one. Mandy Butz led the team offensively, going 2-for-3.
Â
In the nightcap, the Warriors came back with a three-run sixth inning to down the Cardinals (4-2 overall).
Â
Down 2-1, Sobieski led off with a single to right center before DeWolfe drilled a double to the wall. Eiswerth tied the game with a sac fly before pinch-hitting first-year
Alex Elverson (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic) walked. After a flyout, Alexander drove in both runners with a line double into the left-center field gap that made it to the wall.
Â
Plattsburgh brought the tying run in the sixth and seventh innings, but Eiswerth ended the sixth with a strikeout and got a groundball double play from Julia Golino, who was a perfect 3-for-3 with a RBI entering her last at bat, to end the game in the seventh.
Â
The Warriors scored first in the third inning, with George drawing a walk, moving to second on an error and scoring on a two-out RBI single from Wetzel.
Â
Plattsburgh tied the game with an unearned run in the third and took the lead after a walk and two singles plated a run in the bottom of the fifth, setting up the Warriors' rally.
Â
Eiswerth went the distance, allowing eight hits, an earned run and a walk while striking out six in the win. Megan Ormerod took the loss, allowing three earned runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. She struck out nine.
Â
Alexander finished 2-for-4 with a  double and two RBI and Sobieski went 3-for-4 with a run. George scored two runs.
Â
Danielle Torres went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals and Claire Palmer was 2-for-4 with a run.
Â
The Warriors wrap up their spring break trip on Friday, March 17, when they face off with Mansfield at 9 a.m. and Utica University at 1 p.m., at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
